Preventive dentistry and accurate diagnosis of dental problems can allow for early intervention, minimizing damage done to your smile and reducing the amount of work needed to restore your mouth, teeth, and gums to health. Drs. Boris Kaltchev and Arnold Chernoff provide preventive dentistry in Wood Dale, IL, and Evanston, IL, to protect your smile and help it last a lifetime.
Oral Exams and Screenings
Your teeth, mouth, and gums should be examined by a dentist every 6 to 12 months. An oral exam may or may not require radiography (x-rays). BK Dental is proud to offer Digital Radiography that can detect decay in teeth that may not be visible to the naked eye.
- The inside of your mouth and your tongue will be checked, and a screening conducted to scan for oral cancers. When caught early, oral cancer can typically be treated successfully and without invasive procedures.
- All surfaces of your gums will be fully examined for signs of irritation, infection, sores, or gum recession. This process can help spot periodontal (gum) disease in its earliest stages, and treatment can be started to arrest or even reverse its progress.
- Each tooth will be inspected for signs of decay or damage. Filling a small cavity soon after it appears is much less invasive and more cost effective than having to do a root canal or extract a badly decayed tooth.
Your oral exam is a first line of defense against serious gum and tooth issues, and can help diagnose issues early for proactive, effective treatment.
Routine Dental Cleanings (Prophylaxis)
The most important thing you can do for your oral health is simple – brush and floss regularly! A consistent oral health routine is an important of maintaining a healthy, attractive smile. However, even the best oral care regimen won’t get every bit of bacteria and plaque that can build up along and below the gumline. A twice-yearly cleaning is the best way to maintain your tooth and gum health, and allows Dr. Kaltchev and Dr. Chernoff to spot small problems before they turn into larger issues.
If you experience anxiety about dental visits, talk to our team – we have options that can make the process more comfortable for you. If it has been longer than six months since your last dental cleaning, it’s time to schedule that appointment. Our office will treat you compassionately and without judgement, and help you get your dental care back on track. You can request an appointment here or call our offices to book your next preventive dental cleaning in Wood Dale or Evanston today.
Dentistry for Kids
Ideally, your child’s first visit to the dentist will be scheduled as soon as their first tooth erupts, and no later than one year of age. We don’t perform cleanings or other procedures on children younger than two years, but coming in early with your child can get them used to sitting in the chair and having the dentist and hygienist look inside their mouth. At age two, we can begin more thorough exams and prophylaxis (cleaning).
Drs. Kaltchev and Chernoff can also consult with you if your child grinds their teeth (bruxism) to create a custom nightguard, or if they play sports, to fabricate a custom mouthguard. We’re always available to you for a consultation if you have any concern about your child’s teeth or gums, including referrals to an orthodontist if required.
Fluoride and Sealants
An excellent way to prevent decay in teeth is to use fluoride and dental sealants. Fluoride treatments can easily be applied after a regular cleaning to protect teeth. Sealants are another simple, non-invasive treatment that can be done for both children and adults to seal tiny crevices in teeth that are vulnerable to plaque growing bacteria. Ask Dr. Kaltchev or Dr. Chernoff if fluoride and / or sealants are appropriate for you or your child.
If your teeth are healthy, preventive dentistry can help keep them that way. Request a preventive dental appointment in Wood Dale or Evanston today with Dr. Kaltchev, or with Dr. Chernoff for preventive dentistry in Evanston, IL.
